Most loved and best selling Bag

It's my pleasure to share the most popular bag in my store. The class is Step-By-Step so your bag will look professional from the very beginning.

We will make a lined Borla bag with the full set of pockets: outside slide pockets on the front, hidden zip pocket #1 on the back, 3 slide pockets and 1 zip pocket inside.

The bag comes in 4 sizes: Small, Medium (the original one we had here before), L to fit iPad, and XL size fits 13” laptop freely.

The lessons are organized, and each one is a complete unit of work. If you only have 15-20 minutes a day to spare, no worries! It will pick up right where you left off last time. Plus, there's no expiration date on your access to the tutorial. You can watch, rewatch, pause, and enjoy crafting at your own comfortable pace.

Materials and tools

  • Materials for each size:

For each size we will need:

▫️ 2 O-rings for the strap attachments, I use 1.5" diameter, the 1" or 1.25" diameters will work too,

▫️ one buckle of 3/4" (2cm) or the width you'd like for your bag, for the XL size I used 1.5” (38mm)

▫️ 2 lobster hooks - optional, only if you want to make the strap detachable,

▫️ belt leather strap of about 55" (140cm) — “about” because you can measure yourself and pick exactly the length you need, 55" works great for ~5'4" (160-165cm)

▫️ 13-15 rivets to attach the strap and for zip pullers, to have a few more just in case would be great too.

    ▫️outside zip pocket length: 11”(28cm)

    ▫️inside zip pocket length: 10” (25cm)

    S size:

▫️ Leather for the body: about 2.5-3sq.feet

▫️fabric for the lining: about 25” (64cm) of the standard width 44.5” (113cm) for the full set of pockets: slide pockets and 1 zip pocket inside and 1 outside zip pocket on the back.

    ▫️top zipper length 11.5” (28.5cm)

M size (the original, the very first size we had):

    ▫️ Leather for the body: a piece of 15" H x 30" L (38x76cm) or about 4.5 square feet,

▫️fabric for the lining: 3/4 yard of fabric for the lining (68cm) of the standard width 44.5” (113cm) for the full set of pockets: slide pockets and 1 zip pocket inside and 1 outside zip pocket on the back.

    ▫️top zipper length 1 zipper of 13" (33cm)

    L iPad size:

▫️ Leather for the body: Vertical layout: a piece of 15” H x 25.5” L (27.5” L if you want to make leather frames for the inside pockets) or 38x65cm Horizontal layout: 14” H x 31.5” L (35.5x80cm), or about 5.5-6 sq. feet

▫️fabric for the lining: 1 yard of the standard width 44.5” (113cm) for the full set of pockets: slide pockets and 1 zip pocket inside and 1 outside zip pocket on the back.

    ▫️top zipper length 14” (35.5-36cm)

▫️outside zip pocket: 11”(28cm) — if you want you can make the outside zipper on the back longer, in this case simply extend the pocket cut on the pattern and take +1” for the zipper (2.5cm)

    XL Laptop size:

    ▫️leather for the body:

Vertical layout: a piece of 17” H x 28” L (30” L if you want to make leather frames for the inside pockets) or 43x76cm

Horizontal layout: 15” H x 34” L (38x86.5cm), or about 6 sq. feet. The backside detail is the largest and it’s 13” H x 17” L, just make sure it’ll fit in the piece you have.

▫️fabric for the lining: 1 yard (30” actually will be already ok or 76cm) of the standard width 44.5” (113cm) for the full set of pockets: slide pockets and 1 zip pocket inside and 1 outside zip pocket on the back.

▫️top zipper length 15.25” (39cm) is perfect, 15”(38cm)will work too. ▫️outside zip pocket: 11”(28cm) — if you want you can make the outside zipper on the back longer, in this case simply extend the pocket cut on the pattern and take +1” for the zipper (2.5cm)

  • Recommendations about leather and fabric:

The choice of leather depends on the desired outcome:

    - For a soft, slouchy bag, it's best to use 4-4.5oz leather with a soft temper (the temper is usually specified in the leather description).

    When it comes to fabric:

    - For a slouchy hobo-style bag, regular "linen"-thickness cotton will work great, or something similar in thickness and softness.

If you opt for 4-4.5oz leather and prefer a firmer bag: - Consider duck canvas cotton. It's a firm fabric that will give the bag more shape.

Straps: In our lessons, we use belt leather with a thickness of 5.5". You can purchase leather straps of the desired length on Etsy, Buckleguy.com or Tandy leather, there are lots of options :)

▫️ For my bags, I use 4.5oz cowhide leather and regular cotton fabric for the lining.

If you need any help with picking the materials please feel free to ask me on Instagram: Khelmanbags

  • Tools

    ▫️scissors,

    ▫️ruler,

▫️rotary knife or utility knife to cut the leather tops straight,

    ▫️glue, I use Tacky glue from Aleene's,

    ▫️polyester or nylon thread, t70 or v92

▫️awl to make holes in leather,

▫️silver gel pen to trace the pattern on leather (an awl can work too, it depends on leather, the details are in the lesson where we trace the pattern together)

▫️puncher to make nice holes for rivets,

▫️press or hand tool to set the rivets.

  • Time to make

To make the bag takes 3.5-5.5 hours and it depends how many pockets you'd like to add to the bag. Each pocket has its own lesson, and if you're not comfortable making any of the pockets feel free just to skip the lesson this time :)

  • Can I sell the bag I make?

This pattern is made for personal use, and I can't wait to see your interpretation of this design. Additionally, feel free to create and sell small batches of items made from it if you're the single crafter behind the craft. You don’t need to buy a commercial license to sell this bag, the only thing is to use hashtag #khelmanbags_borla and tag @khelmanbags in the description.

▫️If you're interested in making large batches of the bag (more than 300 pieces a year), this option is available. Please contact [email protected] for the commercial agreement, which is $1 per bag sold.
