What to do if a home sewing machine didn't go through bottom folds
To make this bag we need:
▫️a leather piece of 15"x30" (38x76cm) or about 4.5 square feet
▫️3/4 yard of fabric for the lining
▫️1 zipper of 13" length for the top closure (I use metal zipper size #5),
▫️1 zipper of 11" for the zip pocket on the back (plastic or metal)
▫️1 plastic zipper of 10-10.5" for the inside zip pocket,
▫️2 O-rings for the strap attachments, I use 1.5" diameter size of 1" or 1.25" will work too, one buckle of 3/4" (2cm) -- or the width you'd like for your bag,
▫️2 lobster hooks - optional, only if you want to make the strap detachable, belt leather strap of about 55" (140cm) -- about because you can measure yourself and pick exactly the length you need, 55" works great for ~5'4" (160-165cm)
▫️13-15 rivets to attach the strap and for zip pullers, to have a few more just in case would be great too.Address common questions ahead of time to save yourself an email.
What leather to pick depends on the result you want:
If you want soft slouchy bag it's better to take 4-4.5oz leather and soft temper (the temper is usually in the description of the leather).
For the fabric: to get a slouchy hobo style bag - the regular "linen" thickness cotton will work great, and also any satin or something alike in thickness and softness.
If you take 4-4.5oz leather and want more firm bag -- then take a look at the duck canvas cotton. It's a firm fabric and will make the bag more shaped.
Straps: we use belt leather of 5.5" thickness in the lesson. You can buy leather straps of the length you need on Etsy or Buckleguy.com
▫️ I use 4.5oz cowhide leather and regular cotton fabric for the lining. If you need any help with picking the materials please feel free to ask me on Instagram: Khelmanbags
▫️awl or silver gel pen to trace the pattern
▫️ruler (I have two: 3" width and with the center divider) ▫️scissors ▫️Tacky glue for gluing ▫️polyester thread for sewing ▫️binder clips ▫️for setting rivets: puncher and hand tool/press for setting them
To make the bag takes 3.5-5.5 hours and it depends how many pockets you'd like to add to the bag. Each pocket has its own lesson, and if you're not comfortable making any of the pockets feel free just to skip the lesson this time :)
